Classroom instruction: All students will learn intimately about each aspect, but will take leadership roles in one of these critical areas
Programming
Every student learns basic programming skills for mobile applications based on the publicly available framework (i.e. Apple SDK). While some students will excel in this capacity, every student will learn how to build within these frameworks.
Design
As with programming, every student will be intricately involved in the design of the product. We'll teach each student user interface tips, and each student will test the product as it is being developed. Brainstorming will be encouraged.
SAT Prep
Students will begin with a diagnostic test for an analysis of past scores,
and we will design review sessions to meet the specific needs of the students. Our
professors will include test-taking strategies, strengthen and develop the confidence
of the student for test day, and enable your student to reach his or her full potential.
Marketing
This aspect teaches the students about distribution platforms, social media, and the costs/benefits of building a successful marketing strategy. In the community and on the web, students will learn the tradeoffs of all the available approaches.
Business Planning
Students will learn about all the aspects of creating a sustainable business. Basic financial modeling, spreadsheets, and databases are part of the learning process
How It Works
Why:
Start with a student's interest, and integrate education at the intersection of business, economics, and mobile computing. Coupled with Chicago's entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts. The resulting 13 weeks will educate, and cultivate future leaders.
The 21CYP program runs from Jan- May 2011. Below is a high-level schedule of what students participating in the program can expect.
The 21CYP program runs from Jan- May 2011. Below is a high-level schedule of what students participating in the program can expect.
Phase 1: Immersion
Connect with fellow students, and business/program directors; get invaluable feedback that will share the rest of your summer
Phase 2: Concept Development
Work, and learn about building out your product while following a tailored curriculum from experienced professionals.
Phase 3: Business Course
Collaborate with directors to develop and practice your killer pitch for the Showcase.
Phase 4: Post-21CYP Access
The benefits continue after the program ends; as an alum you'll always have access to 21CYP's enrollment next year with resources and relationships.
Sustainability
Our initial goal is to create a sustainable program providing socially relevant education at the intersection of business, economics, and mobile computing. To begin the program, 60% of revenue generated goes into covering the operational costs and expansion of the program to other cities, with the remaining 40% going into a General Scholarship Fund for program participants to have some educational assistance in their continuing education.
Program Roadmap
As the 21st Century Youth Project grows and makes a difference in the lives of our students, we want to be the first sources of funding if they pursue entrepreneurial paths. Inspired by the success of programs as Y-Combinator, we want to create a program that provides limited funding and continued mentorship as these students grow their businesses. If we are successful in this capacity, we'd like to expand our funding capabilities and participation in the development of these entrepreneurial opportunities.
